A Sad Day in Gainesville

So Common Grounds is closing its doors.  There hasn’t been an upset like this in town since the closing of the Hardback. The news is sad, but word on the street is that the owners are on to bigger and better things. Fifteen years is a long time to do anything. Believe me, no one feels this harder than us Gainesvillians.  We’ve been going to the place for over a decade. It’s part of our collective memory. It’s in our blood. It’s more than a bar to us.
We pretty much grew up there. We were a bunch of kids straight out of our parents’ houses and we made Common Grounds our new home. We who were once punk-rockers-gone-wild, are now parents, rock-stars, business-owners, etc. And we all still go to Common Grounds.
Friendships started and ended at Common Grounds. It was our real life reality show. And now we near the end of its last season.  These next two months are going to be packed with emotions and incredible shows. I’ve already caught wind of some amazing bands lining up to play. Get ready, Gainesville. It’s gonna be epic!

Share your favorite Common Grounds Story. We’d love to hear from you.

  1. this is the one place in gainesville that would book indie hip hop acts touring, even going back to the old location, atmosphere, sage francis, el-p too many......this is sad news, thank you for the memories
